Universal TV Remote Control

How to turn on your TV without the remote

No remote, or can't find the power button? There's almost always a way to turn on your TV. Start with the TV itself, then set up your phone for next time.

Short answer

Press the power button on the TV itself: look under the bottom edge of the screen (often under the logo), on the back or on a side. To turn the TV on from your phone next time, switch on its network standby setting: a remote app can then wake it over Wi-Fi. An Android phone with an infrared (IR) emitter can turn it on like its own remote.

Press the power button on the TV

  1. Look under the bottom edge of the screen, in the middle (often under the logo) or near a corner. It can be a small button or a control stick.
  2. Not there? Check the back of the TV and its sides, near the edges.
  3. Press it once and wait a few seconds for the picture.

Turn it on from your phone over Wi-Fi

Many smart TVs can be woken over Wi-Fi from standby, but only when a network standby setting is on. You turn it on once in the TV's settings; after that, the app can switch the TV on.

  1. Turn on your TV's setting (see your brand below). Keep the TV plugged in and connected to your Wi-Fi.
  2. Turn the TV off as usual, so it goes into standby.
  3. Open the app, tap your TV and press the power button.

Turn it on with your phone's infrared

If your Android phone has an infrared (IR) emitter, the app sends the power signal just like the TV's own remote, with or without Wi-Fi and even if network standby is off. Point the top of the phone at the TV. Does my phone have one?

Use a box or console plugged into the TV

A streaming stick or box, or a game console, connected to the TV by HDMI can switch the TV on when you turn it on, if HDMI-CEC is on in the TV's settings (each TV brand gives it its own name). From the app, waking a Fire TV, Roku, Android TV or Google TV stick or box can turn the TV on the same way.
