Short answer

Press the button on the TV: it's usually a small button or control stick under the bottom edge of the screen (often under the logo), or on the back, near the bottom right or left corner. Your phone can turn the TV on over Wi-Fi only on Android TV and Google TV models. An Android phone with an infrared (IR) emitter can turn on the others too, like their own remote.

Find the button on the TV

  1. Look under the bottom edge of the screen, in the middle: many of these TVs have a small button or control stick under the logo.
  2. Not there? Feel along the back of the TV, near the bottom right and bottom left corners, then along its sides.
  3. Press the button, or the middle of the control stick, once. The picture appears after a few seconds.

Turn it on from your phone over Wi-Fi

These brands make two kinds of smart TV: models with Android TV or Google TV, and models with the brand's own smart system. If the TV's apps come from Google Play, or its home screen says Google TV, it's an Android TV or Google TV model.

  • Android TV or Google TV: the app controls the TV over Wi-Fi. The first time, you type the 6-character code shown on the TV: no remote needed. Many models can then be turned on from standby when network standby (Wake on LAN or Wake on Wi-Fi) is on, under Settings › System › Power & energy or Settings › Network & Internet. Android TV guide
  • The brand's own system: the app can't control these TVs over Wi-Fi yet. Use the button on the TV, or your phone's infrared.

Turn it on with your phone's infrared

If your Android phone has an infrared (IR) emitter, it can turn on these TVs like their own remote, smart or not, even without Wi-Fi. Does my phone have one?

  1. In the app's TV list, tap Add a TV with infrared.
  2. Choose your TV's brand: Vestel, Beko and SEG are in the list. For Regal, Arçelik, Onvo or Profilo, choose Vestel.
  3. Point the top of your phone at the TV and tap Send power. If the TV reacts, tap Yes, it works; if not, try the next code.
Try it on your TVFree download, no ads. Your phone becomes the remote in a minute.
